Hazaribagh, Oct 13 (IANS) Jharkhand Police and security forces in Hazaribagh district have recovered a large cache of weapons and Maoist-related material during a joint operation in forest areas along the Hazaribagh-Bokaro border. The officers provided this information.
The operation was carried out on Monday morning by a joint team of Hazaribagh district police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after specific intelligence that a group of Maoists was camping in a dense forest and was planning a major attack in the area.
During the search, forces recovered two self-loading rifles (SLRs), several magazines, large quantity of live cartridges, backpacks, Maoist uniforms, documents and other logistics material used by the rebels.
According to officials, the cash was found hidden in a temporary hideout inside the forest, believed to be used as a temporary hideout by CPI (Maoist) members.
The Maoists reportedly fled the spot after getting information about the arrival of security forces.
The recovery comes amid tight security across Jharkhand as the CPI (Maoist) is observing ‘Protest Week’ from October 8 to 14 to protest against the recent killings of several cadres in police encounters.
Intelligence agencies had warned that during this time Maoists may try to retaliate.
In September, three Maoists were killed in a similar joint operation in Barkatha-Gorhar police station area, including top rebel Sahdev Soren alias Pravesh, who carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore.
Police officials said intensive operations are underway in the forest areas of Hazaribagh, Chatra and Bokaro to destroy Maoist hideouts, disrupt supply chains and neutralize armed squads.
“Due to sustained joint operations and better coordination between the state police and CRPF, there has been a significant decline in Naxalite activities in the area,” an official said.
Security forces are continuing search operations in the area to locate the Maoists and ensure complete clearance of the forest.
