When it comes to before and after, one of the biggest ways to make an impact is in the bathroom — especially if a self-care sanctuary is on your wish list.

And considering how busy lifestyles can prevent us from remodeling large living areas, changing the bathroom space might be just the ticket; Especially if it doesn’t involve too much disruption and mess.

Here, Joan Mellon, Head of Product at Wetwall UK, shares her simple and practical ideas for small bathroom makeovers – without compromising on style or functionality…

Choose wall panels for an instant upgrade

Mellon said wall panels are becoming an increasingly popular choice given their practicality and ease of installation.

“Large format designs help make small spaces appear larger – traditional tiling can close off a space – and wall panels with their seamless, trimless finish really open up rooms.

“And, given how quick they are to install, it usually only takes two and a half hours to fit a bathroom.”

She says accurate wall measurements and the right tools are the keys to a smooth, hassle-free installation. “Helping you avoid surprises and ensure a flawless closing.”

And choosing the right panel will help set the mood. “There is an enduring popularity for stone and marble-effect finishes within bathroom design, and onyx is emerging as a popular, on-trend choice.”

Plus, wall panels can help homeowners achieve a clean and sophisticated look in a small space, without the high cost or installation time of natural stone, says Mellon.

Style Your Splashback

Vanity splashbacks are also an ideal choice for quick change…

Mellon explains that they come pre-sized, so can be installed quickly and are available in a variety of designs.

“There is a growing trend for woodgrain splashbacks as well as other furniture items that simulate natural wood.

She adds, “With their waterproof design and durability, these splashbacks provide a stylish solution for those who want a wood-effect bathroom – without the worry of mildew or water damage.”

Light up the space with clever lighting

As Mellon outlines, updating your lighting will completely revamp your bathroom space, blending practicality with style.

“While natural lighting is often preferred, many bathrooms – especially those in smaller, darker spaces – lack large windows… making smart lighting options essential.”

And with it, you can use lighting to create the atmosphere you’re looking for. “Opt for warm color temperatures, or backlit lighting for a relaxing feel; if you want a fresher, more vibrant look, cooler tones work well.”

In any case, she says that a well-lit mirror with built-in LEDs helps eliminate shadows — making it ideal for practical tasks like makeup application or daily grooming.

“It is important to note that any lighting system requiring wiring should be done by a qualified professional,” Mellon underlines.

While the overall makeover may be DIY-friendly, electrical work where wiring is involved should always be left to experts to ensure safety and compliance.

She says that for those who want to avoid hardwiring, there is now a wide range of battery-powered or rechargeable LED lights available.

“These are perfect for adding mood or accent lighting without the need for an electrician,” she adds. “Typically, depending on the complexity of the wiring, a lighting update will take one to three hours, making this a simple but impactful upgrade.”

Maximize storage with functional design

As smaller homes become more common, smart storage solutions have become essential…

But as Mellon points out, finding enough space can be overwhelming; So understanding how and where to increase storage can make a huge difference, even in the most compact areas.

,Intelligent Designs, such as those that include rear-mirror storage, are an effective way to create a functional area that is sleek and uncluttered.

“Pull-out cabinets improve organization, and drawer-based storage in vanity units optimizes the use of restricted space; reducing the need for bending and scrabbling.

She adds, “This is a particularly beneficial feature for individuals with back problems or balance concerns.”

Mellon suggests that additional aspects like floating shelves only take about an hour to install, and provide additional storage that will instantly transform the look and feel of the bathroom space.

“Embellishing them with plants and greenery can also add a fresh touch to a room.”

Finish off with on-trend accessories

The most effortless bathroom transformations come from small, thoughtful details…

“In just one morning, you can freshen up your space by swapping out stylish new bathmats and patterned towels that bring a boutique touch,” she says.

“Or updating accessories like soap bottles and wall prints to create a whole new atmosphere.”

A pot of paint can also be your best friend. “For a simple, quick update that can make a dramatic change, paint a wall or area of the bathroom,” suggests Mellon.

“Color blocking like this creates a dramatic focal point and can be completed within a few hours.”
