People’s Postcode Lottery players not only have the chance to win thousands of pounds, but also helped missing children,

supporters helped create Plan to launch SafeCall possible – Independent‘S Campaign with charity Missing People Establishing a lifeline specifically for youth in crisis. Co-designed and run by young people themselves, the new, free, 24-hour service will provide essential support, protection and connection to those at risk of disappearing.

It was only with the support of People’s Postcode Lottery players that last year Missing People was able to take the next step and begin more intensive co-production with young people on SafeCall.

The charity recruited youth advisors in 2024, its first staff role focused on young people, to lead the design of SafeCall. Guided by project leaders, some of whom had experiences of their own, the youth mentors brought together 80 other young people to take part in the work.

The team, led by youth mentors from Missing Peoples, came back with a solution that incorporated a new form of support available, as well as new technology specifically aimed at reaching today’s youth.

SafeCall has been designed, tested and piloted – now young people just need a donation to build and launch it.

Laura Chow, Head of Charity at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “It’s fantastic that the support of People’s Postcode Lottery players has helped Missing People identify the need for such a significant change for vulnerable young people – and, importantly, empowered young people to take the lead in designing solutions.

“We are happy with this Independent is supporting Missing People’s fantastic new SafeCall and helping to bring this service to life.”

In the People’s Postcode Lottery, the player’s postcode itself acts as their ticket. It is a subscription-based lottery in Great Britain, where players join monthly draws. At least 30 percent of each ticket price is donated to charity.

Our aim is to raise £165,000 to fund this service so that 70,000 children reported missing Can get protection every year. The charity currently reaches one in four of those children and, with your support, SafeCall will reach many more.

The idea for SafeCall emerged a decade ago when a group of young survivors of abuse told esther roentzenFounder of Childline, that he was not aware of any tailored support for him.

Since children who are being exploited are also often reported missing, Dame Esther, who is among public figures have supported Independent’s campaign, resulting in reaching out to missing people to find solutions – this is where SafeCall was born.
