Health officials have warned that flu cases remain at record levels for this time of year, so hospitals are “not out of the woods yet”. The worrying situation comes as resident doctors in England enter the second day of their strike, embroiled in a bitter dispute with the government over jobs and pay.
Health officials confirmed that the dual challenge of industrial action and rising flu levels means hospitals are on “high alert”. New NHS figures indicate that the number of people being admitted to hospital with flu is continuing to rise across England, remaining at a record high for the period, although the rate of increase has fallen.
Last week, an average of 3,140 flu patients were in the hospital each day, an 18% increase from 2,660 the week before. By this time last year, the number was 2,629 patients; In 2023 it was only 648.
