A UPS cargo plane crashed Tuesday near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) in Kentucky, killing at least three people and injuring at least 11 others.
UPS Flight 2976 crashed into the roof of the Kentucky Petroleum Recycling Building with three crew members on board at about 5:14 p.m. ET after departing from SDF, Gov. Andy Beshear said during a press conference Tuesday evening.
At least two employees of a nearby business, Grade A Auto Parts, are missing, said Beshear, who called the incident “devastating.”
The cause of the accident has not yet been released.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials said the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 crashed at Daniel K. Was headed towards Inouye International Airport.
According to Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, the plane was carrying more than 200,000 pounds of fuel at the time of the incident, which caused the massive fireball explosion.
The Louisville Metro Police Department and Greenberg confirmed that every emergency agency was responding to the crash, which occurred near UPS Worldport.
Police said several people were injured, although UPS wrote in a statement that it had not confirmed any injuries or deaths.
“This is an active scene with fire and debris,” police wrote in an X-post. “Stay away.”
Beshear said there were no hazardous cargo on board the ship at the time of the accident that could pose an environmental problem.
The agency later issued an emergency shelter-in-place alert for the Outer Loop north of the Ohio River. Those in the shelter-in-place area were asked to turn off any air intake systems “as quickly as possible.”
According to LMPD, a victim reunion site has been opened and chaplains will be in attendance.
The SDF noted that all incoming and outgoing flights are temporarily suspended, and the airspace is closed.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct an investigation, which will be led by the NTSB.
