The Home Ministry has ordered a probe into last month’s Ladakh violence, which left four people dead and at least 90 injured, and said it is ready for talks.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice BS Chauhan will lead an “impartial investigation” into the violence, a release said.

The people of Ladakh have been demanding statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule to gain administrative autonomy for more than five years. The BJP government had promised the Sixth Schedule during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Days after the protests, the government arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been advocating peaceful protests and was considered the voice of the people of Ladakh, on charges of suspected links to Pakistan.

The Home Ministry had also accused him of inciting the youth to violence on September 24.

Wangchuk was arrested under the stringent national security law, which allows detention without trial for up to 12 months.

“We will continue to welcome discussions with Apex Body Leh (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) through the High Powered Committee on Ladakh or any such forum,” the ministry said.

He said, “We are confident that continued dialogue will yield the desired results in the near future. The government is committed to the aspirations of the people of Ladakh.”

During this time, Supreme Court adjourned The petition of Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo will be heard on October 15.

Angmo had condemned the “anti-national” statements and other allegations leveled against Wangchuk and his institutions in Ladakh.
