New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday announced the surrender of 21 Maoists in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh at his X platform. This group had laid down arms before the security forces in Antagarh, Kanker the previous day.

In his post, Shah wrote, “Happy to inform that 21 Maoists have surrendered with their weapons in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh. 13 of them were senior cadre. I commend them for renouncing violence and joining the mainstream on the call of Modi government. I reiterate my appeal to the rest who are still waving guns to surrender as soon as possible. We are committed to eliminate Naxalism by March 31.” committed Are.” 2026.”

The surrender came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in the 127th episode of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio show on Sunday that Maoism was nearing its end in India.

21 cadres, including four division vice committee members, nine area committee members and eight party members, surrendered 18 weapons. These included three AK-47 rifles, four self-loading rifles, two INSAS rifles, six .303 rifles, two single-shot rifles and a one-barrel grenade launcher.

Of these, 13 were women. Division committee secretary Mukesh, who was a key activist in the Keshkal division under the Northern Sub-Zonal Bureau, was one of those who surrendered after years of activity in the Kuemari and Kiskoda areas.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai also welcomed the development on Plan.’ …The government is fully committed to the rehabilitation of surrendered Naxalites, ensuring that they are reintegrated into society with dignity and purpose.”

The group was taken from Barrebeda village to the police camp in the early hours of Sunday. This happened after the surrender of 50 Naxalites in Kamtera camp a day earlier.

Since January 2025, more than 1,200 Maoists across Chhattisgarh have surrendered, and more than 900 have surrendered weapons.

Rehabilitation, including medical check-ups and vocational training, has begun under the state policy, which has facilitated more than 1,400 returnees by 2023.

Chhattisgarh Police figures paint a picture of a steady decline in cadres: Over 1,200 cadres have surrendered across the state since January 2025, surrendering over 900 weapons – including 150 AK-47s and INSAS rifles.

In Bijapur alone, 410 people surrendered by October, while in Dantewada 71 people surrendered in September, driven by disillusionment with Maoist dogma and tight security. The results are clear – Naxalite violence has declined by 40 per cent across the country, while incidents in Bastar have declined by 25 per cent year-on-year, as credited by HM Shah.
