He told the New Jersey Lottery that the game they won – Jackpot Millions – was one of several he bought from an Exxon station in Fishers Bay.
The husband said that he and his wife had a competition to see who could win the most from the beginning.
“With our kids, we can’t really leave the house,” the husband said. “So at the beginning of the month, we get some tickets. When the kids go to bed, we take some tickets out. We want to make it like a competition – who can win the most. It seems like at least we’re always tied.”
He said he knew before he could say anything that he had won big, and he handed the ticket to his wife to confirm his victory.
“I saw it, hugged it to my chest and screamed,” she told The Lottery.
Earlier this year, the couple won $1 million playing the Ultimate Spectacular game.
According to New Jersey Lottery officials, the chances of winning two million dollars in the lottery in less than a year are 1 in 2 trillion. For comparison, officials said the couple would be 1.2 million times more likely to be hit by a meteorite than to win the lottery.
New Jersey Lottery director James Carey described the couple’s win as “pure, blind luck.”
“I’ve always said you only need one ticket to win big,” he said. “But I guess, in this case the two tickets definitely didn’t hurt! It’s just pure blind luck.”
The couple have two children – a 5-month-old and an 11-month-old – and another on the way, and said the money will provide for them in the years to come.
