New Delhi, November 4 (IANS) Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand P. Hinduja died in a London hospital on Tuesday. He was 85 years old.
Known as GP in business circles, he took over as chairman of Hinduja Group after the death of his elder brother Srichand in May 2023. He is survived by his wife, Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj and daughter Rita.
Gopichand Hinduja’s family has recently been ranked as the richest in the UK with a net worth of £32.3 billion in the 2025 edition of the Sunday Times Rich List.
Gopichand Hinduja joined the family business in 1950 and is credited with transforming the company from India-Middle East trading operations into an international conglomerate. His other two brothers are Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja.
A graduate of Bombay Jai Hind College, Gopichand received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, according to the company’s website.
Hinduja Group has businesses across eleven sectors including automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, real estate, power and media and entertainment. Some of its famous brands include Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank and NXTDIGITAL Limited.
While Prakash Hinduja has been involved in managing the group’s operations in Europe, youngest brother Ashok Hinduja oversees the group’s interests in India.
Hinduja Group took a major decision to enter the Indian automobile sector in 1987 by purchasing heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland, which is now their dominant company in the Indian automobile sector. The move was considered the first major NRI investment in India at that time.
The Hinduja family came into limelight in 2021 due to a feud that reached a London court. Srichand Hinduja’s daughters Vinu and Sanu accused their three uncles of blocking them from funding and decision making. At that time, Srichand Hinduja, known as SP, was suffering from dementia.
Responding to their niece’s allegations, Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok cited an agreement made by the four brothers in 2013 that “everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone”.
