Shimla, Oct 19 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu visited Tutikandi Bal Ashram here on Sunday and celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, with the residents of the ashram.
The Chief Minister was welcomed with the lighting of traditional earthen lamps and colorful cultural performances by the children and staff of the Ashram.
He interacted with the children, distributed sweets and gifts and wished them a very happy Diwali.
“The true spirit of Diwali lies in sharing happiness, compassion and solidarity. These children are our future and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that they grow up with love, respect and opportunities,” an official statement quoted the chief minister as saying.
He said the state government has adopted the orphans as “children of the state” and is not only bearing their education expenses but also providing them Rs 4,000 per month as their pocket money.
He said that along with upgrading the residential facilities, other facilities will also be increased in children’s shelters across the state.
CM Sukhu also announced that the state government will soon launch new welfare schemes especially for orphans and vulnerable children to ensure their overall development.
He announced that Sports Day would be organized for children of Bal Ashram every year on 14th November, for which the State Government would make adequate budgetary provisions.
The Chief Minister said that to provide better exposure and learning experience to the students of Bal Ashrams, they would be sent on educational tours outside the State.
He called upon the children to focus on their studies and thereafter bring glory to the state by serving the country in various capacities.
Mayor Surinder Chauhan, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaundal, Women and Child Welfare Director Pankaj Lalit and Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap were also present on this occasion.
