Earlier this month Austin Dirks, who had hiked thousands of miles, was crossing a small valley when he suddenly hit the ground, sinking up to his knees.
Dirk, who was stuck in the sand in -7C for two hours, used a GPS satellite messenger to alert rescue workers to his exact location.
After locating Dirk using a drone, rescuers used ladders, shovels and vehicle traction boards to remove the pedestrian without trapping him.
