TV host David Bromstad has opened up about his “substance use” after his home in Florida was destroyed by a hurricane. to renovate From the beginning.
in a clip from My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending shared with People, hgtv star Explained how much his home meant to him, and suffered the brunt of tearing the property down to the studs.
He said in the video how he was “emotionally attached” to the house and how destroying it felt to him was a reflection of what was happening to him internally.
“Whatever happens at home, it feels like it’s happening to you inside,” Bromstad said.
“With all the drama, the house, the stress, the insurance claims, the need for money – I just had to stay busy. My vision for the house was no longer clear. Everything was in disarray.”

As Bromstedt waited on some aspects of the house, he prepared other items off-site.
He said, “At the time I called it art, but it wasn’t. It was like masking what was really happening. I was losing control.”
However, the process became more stressful, as he said his “mind was going crazy.” “I was starting to spiral. I had gotten into some unhealthy behaviors and it’s really easy to go there when you’re in a crisis,” he said.
“Using substances… is a really easy way to get yourself out of a stressful situation. I knew I was in trouble.”
In the upcoming one-hour special, My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy EndingViewers will watch the four-year process – including a year-long break to travel to Norway – of Bromstad fixing up his destroyed Florida home into his dream home.
Bromstad has discussed his substance abuse issues in a previously published interview TV Insider On Wednesday. “This is not the first time art has saved my life,” he told the publication. “Through substance abuse and not being kind to myself, the one thing that has always been safe and stable is my creative talent.”

He also explained why it was important for him to use the upcoming television special to talk about his mental health during that period of his life.
“I think it’s important for people to understand that I’m human, that I struggle, that I’m a naturally bright and shining person,” Bromstad said. “You can’t have bright and shiny times without darkness. I don’t push the darkness away. I bring it in because I know the darkness only makes the bright and shiny parts of me shine brighter.”
