Batsman Jack Crawley praised Joe Root and described him as England’s best player after his record-breaking century on the first day of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi. Root brought England back into the game with his unbeaten 106* after debutant fast bowler Akash Deep gave India a dream start. His innings was a mix of patience and composure as he picked his moments to find the fence and kept the scoreboard ticking. He completed his 31st Test century and pointed towards the dugout and captain Ben Stokes made the same gesture towards the 33-year-old.

“To be honest, we’re very happy for him. We never doubted Joe, we just think that if he gets a few less points, he’s even more deserving than he already is, so we were fully hopeful that he would come out “He deserves everything he gets, he works very hard at his game and he always performs well,” Crawley was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

When conditions were tough, Root remained composed and along with Ben Foakes ensured England remained wicketless in the second session for the first time in the series.

The two batsmen put on a 114-run partnership, leading England to a competitive score after being reduced to 112/5.

“He’s probably the only guy in our team who can play those innings; he’s so good, he’s our best player and he’s stepped up when we’ve needed him to. We needed him to score and he’s done that.” Scored like he did.” For so many years now. He’s an extraordinary player, one of the best – if not the best – players we’ve ever had for England,” Crawley said.

Talking about the day’s action, at the time of stumps, England had scored 302/7 with Root and Ollie Robinson remaining unbeaten with scores of 106(226) and 31(60) respectively.

Root and Robinson made an unbeaten 57-run partnership, which helped England score runs at a healthy run rate. Their unbeaten partnership ensured England crossed the 300-run mark and ended the day on a high note.
