Difficulty tracking deaths IranThe government’s decision to cut off the country’s internet and international calls has fueled nationwide protests, but some information is still leaking.

The AP has relied on data from the human rights activist news agency, which has reported hundreds of deaths. The U.S.-based agency has been accurate during years of demonstrations, relying on a network of activists inside Iran to confirm all reported deaths.

The Associated Press was unable to independently confirm the group’s death toll because of communications obstruction in Iran. Iran’s theocratic government has not yet provided casualty figures from the demonstrations.

Iranian state media has provided little information about the demonstrations, making it difficult to assess their scale. Videos have emerged online that offer brief, shuddering sights of people walking on the street or the sounds of gunfire.

The AP report relied on some of the videos, which were likely beamed out of the country via Starlink satellite dishes. The Associated Press verified the authenticity of the footage by comparing it to known locations and events and speaking with area experts. The AP also ensured the content of the video was consistent with its own reporting.
