Chennai, Nov 12 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy rain at isolated places in four southern districts of Tamil Nadu – Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.
The department has attributed this weather activity to a low pressure trough over the southeast Arabian Sea. According to the latest bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai, the presence of the atmospheric disturbance is expected to cause widespread rainfall over the southern coastal belt, especially the hilly areas of Tirunelveli district.
The IMD cautioned that some areas in the Western Ghats region of Tirunelveli may experience intense rainfall with lightning and gusty winds during the evening.
“The low pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea is affecting the southern parts of the state. Due to this, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts today,” the RMC statement said.
Meanwhile, the sky in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy with light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places during the afternoon or night.
The department said the maximum temperature is likely to be around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 26 degrees.
Unlike last week, no warnings have been issued for fishermen along the Tamil Nadu coast or adjacent sea areas, as wind conditions are expected to remain moderate and sea generally calm. However, fishermen have been advised to remain alert to the updated forecasts in the coming days, as atmospheric conditions in the Bay of Bengal may change.
The IMD also noted that the prevailing easterly wind pattern is likely to cause occasional light rain over other southern and interior districts by the middle of the week.
Officials urged residents of low-lying areas to remain vigilant as heavy rain at isolated places could lead to waterlogging in sensitive areas.
With Northeast Monsoon active across Tamil Nadu, weather conditions are expected to remain unstable over the southern districts for the next few days.
