Chennai, Nov 15 (IANS) Heavy rain is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an alert for several coastal and interior districts.
The weather office has said that the rains that started on Saturday are likely to intensify in many areas, especially in the delta and northern coastal areas.
In the morning bulletin, the IMD said Ramanathapuram district recorded significant rainfall during the 24 hours ending Friday morning.
Mandapam received 7 cm rainfall, the highest in the state. Areas including Rameshwaram, Pamban and Azhagarai Estate in Nilgiris in Ramanathapuram district witnessed around 5 cm rainfall each.
Officials noted that these widespread rainfall is linked to the atmospheric circulation formed over southern Sri Lanka and adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal.
According to the forecast, intermittent rain will continue over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today and tomorrow, with thunderstorms likely at a few places.
IMD expects moderate rain to continue in many districts till November 20.
Heavy rain warning has been issued in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts.
Parts of the Cauvery delta, these areas are expected to experience intense spells due to the prevailing atmospheric conditions coupled with moisture-laden winds coming from the Bay of Bengal.
Apart from Sunday’s warning, the IMD said several districts including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Thanjavur may receive heavy rain in the coming days.
Union territories Puducherry and Karaikal are also included in the alert.
Meanwhile, Chennai and its surrounding areas will remain partly cloudy today with the possibility of light rain in some areas.
While the city has been spared intense rain so far, the weather office has cautioned residents to expect an increase in rain activity by late Saturday night.
Fishermen have been advised to keep a close eye on updates due to rough sea condition over southwest Bay of Bengal.
The IMD said detailed advisories will be given based on the development of the weather system in the next 48 hours.
Officials in the delta region and coastal districts have been asked to remain alert as the November rain system is strengthening, causing widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
