Chennai, Oct 8 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for 10 districts of Tamil Nadu, warned of strong winds along the Karnataka-Kerala-Lakshadweep coast and advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall is likely over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal and Tirupattur districts today.
Residents in these areas have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid waterlogged areas, as the rain may be accompanied by storm surge and strong winds.
Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain in some parts of the city. Travelers have been advised to plan travel carefully as sudden rains may lead to traffic congestion and local flooding.
The IMD also said that the maximum temperatures over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to gradually drop by two to three degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours. Due to cloudy sky and humid winds at this time of the year, the day temperature is expected to be slightly below normal.
Winds are expected to blow at a speed of 40-50 kmph on the west coast, which can reach speeds of up to 60 kmph at times.
The weather office has particularly cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea along the Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts as conditions could be dangerous due to strong waves and strong currents.
Officials have been asked to be prepared for possible waterlogging, falling of trees and power disruption in sensitive districts.
Disaster management teams in the Nilgiris and Western Ghats belt have been asked to monitor hilly areas for possible landslides. Residents are advised to protect exposed outdoors, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall, and have emergency supplies ready. People living near rivers and streams should keep an eye on sudden rise in water level.
Officials said the current spell over parts of western and interior Tamil Nadu is expected to continue for at least the next 24 hours, with further rain-related advisories issued if the situation turns severe.
Travelers and fishermen have been urged to follow updates from the IMD and local disaster management cells.
