Heavy rain and snowfall may occur in some areas of Himachal Pradesh from February 18th to 19th; Orange warning issued

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain, snow and thunderstorms along with hail and strong winds are likely to occur in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday and Monday. On Saturday, the weather remained dry and temperatures increased slightly during the day, with the maximum temperature in Una reaching 27 degrees Celsius.

From February 18th to 19th, the Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow warning for heavy to extremely heavy rain, snow, and thunderstorms, with local hail, strong winds, and thunder and lightning. Local heavy rain, snow, and thunderstorms are expected, along with local gusts of wind and thunder and lightning. From February 20 to 21, there will be heavy rain in some areas, heavy rain in most areas of the low mountains, and rain and snow in the middle and high mountains. A new western disturbance may affect the western Himalayas starting from Saturday night.

The maximum temperature was 4 to 10 degrees above normal at most places, with Kalpa and Keylong in Kinnaur tribe, Lahaul and Spiti districts recording maximum temperatures of 16 and 4 degrees, 10 and 6 degrees above normal respectively. Daytime temperatures crossed 22 degrees in most places, with Bilaspur and Sundar Nagar recording the highest temperatures of 26 degrees and 24.9 degrees, followed by Kangra at 23.6 degrees, Mandi at 23.4 degrees and Solan at 23 degrees.

Between January 1 and February 17, the state’s average winter rainfall was 68.2 mm, while the normal rainfall was 142.2 mm, a shortfall of 52%. All districts except Mandi experienced rainfall deficit ranging from 15% (Hamirpur) to 83% (Lahaul and Spiti).

Minimum temperatures also remained above normal, with Keelung being the coldest in the region with a minimum temperature of -3.7 degrees, 6.3 degrees above normal, followed by Kusumseri -3.2 degrees, Sumdo -2.3 degrees and Kalpa -0.8 degrees.
