‘Heaviest rain in two months’ set to hot

By | Published | No Comments

The past week has seen warm days and big blue sunny skies. But forecasters are warning rain is on the way – and lots of it over some parts of the country.

Perth could see up to up to 75mm of rain by Wednesday with particularly heavy downfalls on Monday.

But it’s not just parts of the West. Southern Australia too could see rain, heavy at times, from midweek onwards.

“Widespread rain is developing in Central Australia this weekend and pushing toward the east coast,” said Sky News Weather meteorologist Alison Osborne.

“For inland New South Wales, a month’s rainfall is likely by Thursday.”

Ms Osborne added that a deep low and series of fronts were set to cross the southwest of WA from Sunday.

This will likely result in strong gales and heavy coastal rain, as well as heavy swells, with the highest impacts expected on Monday and Tuesday.

“Perth is poised to see the heaviest rain in around two months, if not more,” she said.

For the WA capital, rain is likely to ramp up on Sunday during the afternoon with a potential thunderstorm and 7-15mm of rain. Temperatures will peak at 21C.

Then on Monday it just gets wetter with 15-35mm of moisture and more storm possibilities. Expect a high of 18C and low of 11C.

The rain continues into Tuesday when up to 20mm could fall. Further intermittent showers on Wednesday are due with showers likely on and off to round out the week. The mercury will top out a 15C on Tuesday and 19C on Thursday.

Similar conditions will settle in across the state’s south west coast.

“After hitting WA, this low and front are expected to move further east in the middle of the week, possibly delivering another round of showers and storms to southern and southeastern Australia between Wednesday and the weekend,” reported website Weatherzone.

Shower and storms are also on the cards for Adelaide on Sunday but the totals will likely be nowhere near as high as Perth, with just a few millimetres coming down.

Expect light showers to start the week but Wednesday could be wet with anything between 6mm and 25mm over the city. Thursday will see a top up of another 7mm or so.

Temperatures in Adelaide will bob around the 20C mark all week with mid teen minimums.

Dry in Hobart on Sunday and Monday with highs of 15-17C and as low as 3C on Monday morning.

Showers could creep in from Tuesday with up to 7mm of rain on Thursday. A mild week of highs around 16C peaking at 18C on Wednesday and Thursday.

A sunny Sunday in Melbourne but not all that warm only getting up to 13C with the chance of frost first thing.

Monday morning could also be frosty with a 3C low leading into a 15C high on a mostly sunny day.

A few showers for Tuesday and Wednesday with heavier falls on Thursday in Melbourne.

The general moisture for the end of the week will mean the opening of the ski season could be dicey with rain, rather than snow, a definite possibility.

Some heavy downpours for Canberra later in the week. But Sunday and Monday should be dry albeit cloudy with 15C highs and 5C lows.

Up to 5mm could fall on Tuesday, then a shower on Wednesday, before a possible 20mm of rain on a soggy Thursday.

Inland NSW could pick up some good pours this week. Around 15mm in Parkes on Monday is forecast; Condobolin is looking at 20mm on Thursday and Cobar might get 30mm on Monday and then another 20mm on Friday.

It won’t be as wet as that in Sydney but a shower is possible on a partly sunny Sunday which will brush 20C. Temperatures will remain pretty consistent throughout the week with 12-13C minimums.

Monday will be cloudy and then a touch of rain on Tuesday. The wettest day could be Thursday but it won’t be a washout.

Expect a bit of sogginess in Brisbane over the coming days with the odd shower paired with 22C highs and 16C lows.

But from Tuesday it’s looking fine with just a few clouds in the sky. The highs could get up to 25C on a sunny Friday.

Darwin can expect a sunny and dry week with 31C highs sinking to 20C overnight.
