The Meteorological Department has warned of a heat wave in parts of eastern India and the peninsula over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also said that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to occur in the Northeast by April 9.

The IMD said today and tomorrow, Odisha, West Bengal Ganga, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, northern interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Raya Heatwave conditions are likely to occur at isolated places in Laxima and Telangana states.

IMD said it is expected to include Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh “Heavy rainfall” will occur in parts of Ganga, Odisha and West Bengal.

The IMD said heat wave conditions have persisted in isolated areas of north interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

“Widespread sunshine and moderate rainfall or snowfall, possibly accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning, are likely to occur over West Bengal and Sikkim south of the Himalayas over the next seven days,” the IMD said.

The Center on Wednesday told states and union territories to prepare plans to mitigate the impact of the heat wave, especially mass gatherings during the Lok Sabha elections.

Federal Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya gave the directive after reviewing public health preparedness to deal with heat-related illnesses.

“Timely, advanced and widespread awareness of preventive measures will go a long way in reducing the severe impacts of heat waves,” he said.

The IMD recently predicted that the maximum temperature in the country will be above normal this year.

Mandaviya said the risk of heat stroke has increased as temperatures have reached 40 to 42 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country since early April.

“As we all know, the 2024 general election is approaching and broad public participation is expected. Without public participation, this great event will not be completed. While ensuring public participation, we all have a responsibility to take care of our health,” He said.
