The Hatkragha Mela-specific UT level handloom expo was started today at the Kashmir Haat Exhibition Ground in Srinagar, marking a vibrant festival of India’s rich handloom heritage.
The event is organized by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, and is sponsored by the Development Commissioner of the Handloom, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
This special expo brings together 60 skilled handloom weavers and artisans from across the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which directly provides them a dedicated platform to show and sell their unique, handicraft products.
The exhibition aims to promote and preserve traditional weaving techniques, supporting the economic upliftment of weavers communities.
The expo offers an array of best handloom products including Pashmina shawl, kani and sozony embroidered items, cotton and silk sarees, stalls, rugs, household items, and various parts of the UT.
The Hatkargh Mela acts not only as a market, but also as a cultural bridge, which encourages public praise and awareness about the artistic and economic importance of handloom in the Indian textile sector. This underlines the government’s commitment to maintain traditional crafts and empower artisan communities. Since the program is planned with the holy festival, it is expected that a large leg of visitors will visit the exhibition.
The exhibition will continue for a period of 14 days and end on June 18, 2025. In addition, the exhibition will demonstrate the work of Craft Development Institute and Indian Institute of Carpet Technology. The event will also showcase live performances of art and craft by the master artisans of the School of Design Srinagar.
