Chandigarh, October 23 (IANS) Union Minister and former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday met IPS officer Y. Met the family members of Puran Kumar, who died by suicide earlier this month. Additional Director General of Police Puran Kumar had accused senior officials of the police department of caste-based discrimination as the reason behind taking the extreme step.
He met IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, wife of Puran Kumar, and expressed his condolences.
After a nine-day standoff over the senior officer’s post-mortem, Puran Kumar’s last rites were performed on October 15 with the consent of his wife Amneet.
The standoff ended with the Haryana government assuring the family of a fair investigation as well as a commitment to take action against “erring” officials.
Puran Kumar’s family members, his colleagues, including OP Singh, who has been given additional charge of Director General of Police in place of Shatrujit Kapoor, bureaucrats, politicians and several supporters attended the last rites here.
The autopsy was conducted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) after the consent of the family.
PGIMER said in a statement that the post-mortem of Puran Kumar was conducted on October 15 by a constituted medical board following all due procedures. The post-mortem report will be handed over to the investigating officer of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Police said Additional Director General of Police Puran Kumar shot himself with his service pistol and died on the spot. The officer left a nine-page final note, naming 15 current and former officers and top officials of the state police, who were targeted for racism and bias.
Last week, Khattar had also met the family members of Rohtak police cyber cell ASI Sandeep Kumar Lather, who allegedly committed suicide just days after Puran Kumar.
The Union Minister expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that the government will provide financial assistance to Sandeep’s wife for a job and children’s education.
