Cambridge:
In a high-day deadlock, the administration of President Donald Trump says it will freeze $ 2.2 billion in federal research grants for Harvard University, which is emphasizing the demands for change in the policy of the campus.
The quarrel between the Republican administration and the country’s wealthiest college will be closely seen during higher education as the White House uses Federal Funding to carry forward compliance with its political agenda.
But the impact will be felt immediately by researchers from the IV League School and its fellow institutions. While some have made Harvard’s stand happy against the demands of tightening the protesters and advancing the diversity of more approaches between the faculty, others worry that life -saving scientific research will be in danger.
Cambridge, across the university in Massachusetts, Federal Money took 10.5% of the revenue in 2023, not financial assistance such as grants and student loans.
Will research be affected?
Harvard has not released a list of affected grants, and it is possible that the university is yet to have a clear idea of what may be frozen.
In other complexes with funding freeze, the details of the cut became clear only over time as the work orders were stopped. At Brown University, a White House official said he was planning to freeze half a billion dollars in federal money on 3 April, but university officials said on Tuesday that they still did not know which programs could be targeted.
In Harvard, an education department official said that hospitals associated with the university would not be affected.
Five Boston-sector teaching hospitals associated with Harvard Medical School are considered in the world’s top medical institutions, which serve as an economically independent non-profit. Their employees often have teaching appointments at Harvard Medical School and their research is funded by federal grants.
But the work to be unsafe for cuts includes research in Harvard’s TH Chan School of Public Health, stating that 46% of its budget last year was funded through federal grant. Among other things, it was paid for research on cancer, Alzheimer’s, Stroke and HIV.
Why does not use its massive settlement to pay for Harvard research?
Harvard has a settlement of $ 53 billion, which is the largest in the country. But Harvard leaders say that endowment is not an all-purpose account that can be used for the happiness of the university.
Many donors contributed to a specific goal or project. And Harvard has stated that it depends on some settlement to help the middle class and low -income students subsidize tuition costs.
Last week, Harvard began working to borrow $ 750 million from Wall Street to help cover general expenses. The university has described the effort as part of the contingent plan for a series of potential landscapes
What would this mean for graduate students?
Losing federal research grants may mean low research opportunities for Harvard Graduate Students. If the funding deduction removes the faculty, it can also mean a low risk for top level researchers.
Last month, Harvard expanded financial aid, so middle class families would not have to pay as much for tuition, room and board. It is not clear that losing federal grants can affect those schemes.
Outsiders have suggested that Harvard and other universities should cut back on top level facilities to free money for research.
Harvard enrolls 7,000 undergraduate students and about 18,000 students in graduate programs.
