Harry Maguire Turns out he’s finally ticked off an ambition from his wish list by winning Enfield with Manchester United – and admitted that it was crossing his mind that this could be his last chance to do so before leaving Old Trafford.
The England centre-back, who joined from Leicester in 2019, scored Decisive as United in 84th minute Recorded their first win away to Liverpool since 2016.
Maguire Has only started three league games this season and his contract expires next summer, so facing an uncertain future, he was well aware that he would never win at Anfield in a United shirt.
“I’ve been here seven years, so it’s tough not to win,” he said. “It’s on my mind a bit. I’m in my last year now, so it could be the last time I play at Anfield for this club, so it’s really important I come here and tick that off because it’s on my mind.”
Maguire lost the captaincy and his place during a mixed spell at Old Trafford, but he also had a knack for scoring some dramatic late goals, including the decisive extra-time goal against Lyon in last season’s Europa League. It remains one of his best and he said he was lost in delirium before leaving to celebrate with United supporters.
“Amazing moments. I’ve had some great times at this club and had some big winners,” he said. “Obviously winning in Lyon and then winning at Anfield is a great moment for me, a great moment for my family, and yes, something I’m really proud of.
“I didn’t know where I was when I put it in the stadium. I knew I was in the stadium. I just wanted to do the trademark kneeslide. I probably should have gone to Bruno [Fernandes] After all the amazing support they gave me but you don’t realize it when you’re in that moment.

“But when I walked to the other end I felt I needed to celebrate in front of the United fans. They have been amazing to me throughout my time here. We know how important the game is to our fans. Last year we did really well and I probably had a chance to win it, so it was a big important win for me, for every player, for the staff, for Ruben. But more importantly, “It’s a big win for our fans because it’s been tough for them.”
Maguire played in the 4–0 defeat at Anfield in 2022 and was an unused substitute when United were beaten 7–0 in 2023 and he reflected: “Very often he [Liverpool] Celebrating and you have to go out onto the pitch, walk to that far end, clap the fans because they have been amazing with us. We have had a few draws there and had some good performances, there are a lot of negatives. To get that win is very special for the fans.
