harry brook He admitted that after falling behind the other England team, he was becoming frustrated with their faltering batting. ODI Lose the series.

England Scored 400 against the West Indies in June and 414 against South Africa last month, but in eight overseas ODIs in 2025, he has not batted in his allotment of 50 overs seven times.

In new zealandWhile the conditions have helped the fast bowlers, especially early on, England have failed to find the right pace and modest totals of 223 and 175 were surpassed with relative ease.

Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jacob Bethel will travel to Australia next week along with Brook for the much-hyped Ashes, while Jos Buttler is regularly hailed as England’s best white-ball batsman.

So his continued weaknesses are troubling Brook, who, when asked if he was irritated for the first time in his limited-overs captaincy, said: “Yeah, it’s frustrating.

“You go out there to every single player and think, ‘Hey, there aren’t many teams in the world that don’t have him.’ It is disappointing that we did not perform as well as we could have.

“Everyone in that batting order is good enough to be able to face the swinging and seaming ball. In my eyes, it’s just an excuse, and they are good enough to be able to face it and score runs.

“A few games ago in the summer we scored 400 against South Africa, so we’re not a million miles away. It’s just about a few scores here and there and then we wrap it up.”

After going down 2-0 in a match played in Wellington on Saturday, England have now lost six of their last seven ODI series and automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup is not a formality.

Their eighth-place position puts them in danger of being overtaken by the Windies and Bangladesh and if that happens, England will have to enter the qualifying tournament to take part in the World Cup.

It would be quite a letdown for a team that was close to full strength until recently but has been unable to shake off its poor form since winning the 2019 World Cup, with four wins in 14 ODIs.

“It’s not too different to the way we play Test cricket,” Brook said. “We play aggressively in Test cricket and it’s not too far off.”

“Obviously, we haven’t played a lot of one-day cricket over the last several years. I can’t put my finger on why we haven’t batted well enough. It’s just one of those things.”

England were demolished at the Sky Stadium – colloquially known as the ‘cake tin’ – at the 2015 World Cup, a situation which led Eoin Morgan to turn around the fortunes of white-ball teams.

Jofra Archer was a ray of hope in Wednesday’s defeat, but with the first Ashes Test in Perth three weeks away and having already lost the ODI series, England may not want to risk him in the New Zealand capital.

“He gets a spot on every team in the world,” Brooks said. “So, it’ll be good to see him for the rest of this winter.”
