England captain harry brook and opening batter Phil Salt Keep new zealand The tourists recorded the highest T20 score with a 65-run win at Hagley Oval.

Brook was particularly combative in a staggering display of power hitting, hitting 78 off 35 balls with five sixes and six fours and sharing a 129-run partnership with Salt, who made 85 off 56 balls.

With the efforts of these two, England scored 236 runs for four wickets, breaking the previous best score of 208 runs for five wickets. christchurch In 2022, the Black Caps scored 171 runs in 18 overs against Bangladesh and trailed the three-match series 1-0.

Brydon Carse struck twice in his opening over, but it was Adil Rashid who took four for 32, helping New Zealand benefit from breaking into their replies and getting the fielders in the line regularly.

England scored 153 runs for six wickets in the series opener at the same venue on Saturday, but this time they gave a tough challenge to the New Zealand bowlers.

He got help as Brook was given a life on 39, dropped by Jimmy Neesham running to the boundary, while Jacob Bethel reached 24 from seven after being top-edged by wicketkeeper Tim Seifert.

England were once again asked to bat first and Salt found his rhythm by dismissing Matt Henry at deep midwicket.

It was the opener’s only six off his second ball, but he continued to pull up the ropes, taking advantage of the fielding restrictions with half a dozen fours in the powerplay.

Bethel succeeded after his drop and hit two consecutive sixes off Michael Bracewell before failing to hit a six in the in-field.

Brook was overturned when given out caught behind the leg-side on 22, but it was Neesham’s drop, moments earlier having leaked 20 runs in his only over, that was particularly costly.

Brook later added insult to injury by hitting a six off Kyle Jamieson before crossing the leg-side boundary twice.

Brook came close to overtaking his partner, but the pair fell behind as Jamieson moved forward at a faster pace.

Brook perished to deep midwicket and Salt, within three strokes of a world record-equalling fifth T20 century, fell to long-off two balls later.

Tom Banton departed with his Somerset teammate Henry on 29 not out, taking England past the 200-run mark and helping New Zealand chase their highest successful T20 target.

England appeared to be in complete control when Robinson made an error at mid-on off Carse, who edged the ball to Rachin Ravindra three balls later, but Seifert and Mark Chapman added 69 to steady the Kiwis.

However, Liam Dawson and Rashid applied pressure in the middle overs and both took two wickets each, taking New Zealand’s score from 87 for two to 104 for six, dashing their hopes.

With nothing to lose, Mitchell Santner entertained the home crowd with three sixes and as many fours in his 15-ball 36, but the all-rounder fell to Rashid trying to cross the boundary and the game was gone with him.
