Tory MP Robert Jenrick Recently criticized Handsworth.
At a Conservative dinner he complained that this clause birmingham was poorly integrated and he did not see any other white faces while visiting, adding: “This is the closest we get to a slum in this country”. This couldn’t seem more different from the reality as perceived by our reporter Bethan.
Having traveled here by boat from India, Handsworth was the first place his family settled and although they may have faced hardships, he remembers Handsworth as a place where culture flourished and artists such as reggae band Steel Pulse and singer Apache Indian developed amongst a supportive diverse community.
In this video Bethan meets the people who live there today.
