Halle Berry is a passionate advocate for perimenopausal education, whose advocacy was sparked by a traumatic encounter during a doctor’s visit.
The 57-year-old actress spoke at the Day of Unreasonable Conversations summit on Monday, recounting a misdiagnosis by a doctor who mistakenly diagnosed her with “the worst case of herpes he had ever seen.”
After receiving a negative test result and confirming perimenopause, Berry recognized a clear gap in women’s reproductive health education, prompting her to take action.
“First of all, my ego tells me I’m going to skip it [perimenopause] – I’m very safe, I’m healthy, I’ve been successfully off insulin and under control of my diabetes since I was 20 years old,” she recalled in a conversation with First Lady Jill Biden.
She continued, “My doctor didn’t have the knowledge and didn’t prepare me, and that’s when I knew, ‘Oh my god, I have to use my platform. I have to make the most of myself, and I have to start doing it for other women. Make a difference and change,” she explains.
The Oscar-winning actress further declared that since her own unfortunate experience, she hopes to “help change the way our culture views women at this stage of their lives.”
