Gyanvapi Mosque case: Hindu side files new request to investigate other basements in building

The Hindu side of the Jawapi Masjid case on Monday moved a fresh plea in court asking the ASI to conduct a probe into the remaining basements inside the mosque.

The petitioner Rakhi Singh filed the application in Varanasi lower court. The application said the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) should conduct a study after clearing the blocked entrance and debris.

In his petition, Singh claimed that some basements inside the mosque were not investigated as their entrances were blocked. Therefore, the ASI should direct a survey of the wine cellar without causing any damage to the structure, the petition said.

SC to hear ‘Wazukhana’ probe petition

On the other hand, the Supreme Court will hear a petition on Monday seeking a scientific survey of the ‘wazukhana’ and surrounding sealed areas around the controversial Gyanvapi mosque complex.

The wazukhana – a bathing pool where worshipers cleanse themselves before going to the mosque to pray) – was sealed in 2022 on a Supreme Court order. The Hindu side claims that the fountain-like structure at Vazukana is the ‘Shivling’.
