Armed attackers killed 11 people and injured 12 others at a football stadium in the Mexican city of Salamanca after a game on Sunday, Mayor Cesar Prieto announced on Facebook. The motive for the deadly attack is unclear.
Prieto added that the attack, which occurred during a social gathering in the Loma de Flores neighborhood and injured a woman and a child, was “regrettable and cowardly.” He described the incident as a “serious social breakdown”.
“This incident adds to the wave of violence that we are experiencing in the state and in Salamanca in particular,” he added. “Unfortunately, criminal gangs are trying to conquer the authorities, but they are unable to achieve this goal.”
The Attorney General’s Office of Guanajuato state, where Salamanca is located, said it had launched an investigation into the attack.

The office is coordinating efforts with city, state and federal authorities to increase security in the area, protect people and find possible perpetrators, the office added in a statement.
“Those responsible will be found,” Prieto added in comments on Facebook.
Guanajuato is one of the most dangerous states in Mexico.
