India’s Gulveer Singh lost his men’s 3000m gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran as he was disqualified for ‘lane violation’. Gulveer had topped the podium in the non-Olympic athletics event 3000 meters final late on Monday night with a timing of 8 minutes 07.48 seconds. He was later disqualified for lane violation and a late night ‘appeal’ by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) was also rejected.

“Yes, it was ruled that Gulveer had violated the lane,” a coach present with the team told PTI. Of course, AFI protested but the protest was rejected.

“The jury said they had enough evidence to conclude that Gulveer committed a lane violation.” Various sections of Technical Rules 17.2 and 17.3 explain how an athlete may violate the lane and under what circumstances he or she may not be disqualified.

Technical rule 17.2.3 states: “In all lane running races (or any part of a lane running race), every athlete must remain within his allotted lane from start to finish and, when racing on turns , must not step or run on or into the left-hand lane line or, in the case of an inside lane, the boundary or line marking the inside limit of the track.” Kyrgyzstan’s Keneshbekov Nursultan, who finished second with a timing of 8:08.85 seconds, was awarded the gold.

Iran’s Jalil Naseri (8:09.39), who originally finished third, took silver and Kazakhstan’s Frolovsky (8:17.17) took bronze.

With Gulveer losing the gold, India ended their campaign with three gold and one silver.

Top shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, 100m hurdler Jyoti Yaraji and Harmilan Bains (1500m) had won a gold medal each on the first day of the competitions on Saturday. Toor and Yaraji had broken their own national records.

On Monday, Ankita had won the silver medal in the women’s 3000 meter race with a timing of 9:26.22 seconds.

India had won one gold, six silver and one bronze medal in the last edition in Astana, Kazakhstan.
