Gandhinagar, October 20 (IANS) A case of reckless driving has come to light in Gujarat’s capital Gandhinagar, in which two scooter riders were injured when a speeding car collided with their vehicles near the busy G Circle in the Infocity area.
The accident happened on Sunday evening.
According to initial police reports, the car driven by a woman named Jyoti Rai allegedly hit two Activa scooters coming from the wrong direction.
Eyewitnesses reported that the collision was severe, with both occupants thrown from their vehicles. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.
Sources said the driver suffered minor injuries and fled the spot immediately after the accident. However, in a dramatic turn of events, he surrendered at the Infocity police station that night.
The police have taken him into custody and initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Local residents have expressed concern over frequent accidents at Junction G Circle, notorious for overspeeding and traffic violations.
“Despite repeated incidents, the speed limit is not strictly enforced,” said a daily commuter.
Officials said both speeding and wrong-way driving appear to be responsible for the accident. Data from Gujarat’s transport department paints a grim picture: in 2023 alone, the state recorded 16,349 road accidents, leading to 7,854 deaths.
In five years (2018-2022), there were 80,150 registered accidents and 36,626 deaths in Gujarat.
Crucially, overspeeding is responsible for more than 83 per cent of these deaths, while other factors such as not wearing seat belts or helmets, driving without a license and overloaded vehicles have also contributed significantly.
Police have begun an investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events and fix responsibility for the accident.
