Gandhinagar, October 22 (IANS) Six-month-old infant Shahrukh was kidnapped from the outskirts of Panot village near Chhatral Road in Kalol in Gandhinagar district in Gujarat on Diwali. However, Gandhinagar Police solved the case within a few hours, traced the accused and rescued the child safely.
According to police sources, Kala Mir and his family had gone for shopping in Kalol and were sitting near a lassi shop near Chhatral Bridge on October 20 around 2:30 pm.
Leaving her newborn son with her family, Kala Mir went out briefly to buy balm from a nearby medical store. Within no time, an unknown woman wearing a green saree went towards the bridge with the child.
When Kala Mir returned she found her child missing and immediately raised an alarm. Responding quickly, teams of Kalol Taluka Police, Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG) and cyber surveillance units launched a coordinated investigation.
Based on CCTV footage and local intelligence, officials identified the suspect as Madhi Nayak, a 40-year-old woman who previously lived in Galaxy Society, Chhatral.
After an 18-hour search using technical surveillance and informer networks, the police traced Madhiben Nayak in Meda-Adaraj village and captured her.
Kidnapped Shahrukh was recovered safely and reunited with his parents safely. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed that he had kidnapped the child out of his deep desire to have a child of his own.
Following his arrest, the Gandhinagar police handed over the infant back to his family, who expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the authorities for their prompt and effective action.
In 2023, Gujarat recorded a significant increase in child kidnapping cases, with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) documenting a total of 734 kidnappings, including both minors and adults.
Notably, 296 of these cases were reported in Ahmedabad, a sharp increase from 182 cases in 2021. The majority of victims were girls aged 12 to 16, who were often abducted for purposes such as forced marriage, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation.
