Bob Weir, a founding member of the iconic rock band the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78.

News of Will’s death came via statement on his website posted Saturday. Weir was diagnosed with cancer in July and “courageously” fought the disease, but “succumbed to underlying lung issues,” the statement said.

“After fighting cancer as bravely as only Bobby could, he made a peaceful transition surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement read.

Last year, Will began cancer treatment just weeks after performing in Golden Gate Park, California.

“He was diagnosed in July, began treatment just weeks later, and returned to his hometown stage for a three-night celebration of music’s 60th anniversary in Golden Gate Park. These emotional, soulful, and radiant performances were not a farewell, but a gift,” the statement read.

Will founded Grateful Dead 1965, with Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Ron McKernan.
