A Russian military plane crashed in the sea off Ukraine’s annexed Crimean peninsula on Thursday, the Moscow-appointed governor of Sevastopol said.
Mikhail Razvozhayev posted on Telegram that “a military plane crashed into the sea” but did not disclose the reason.
Videos on social media showed a burning plane falling from the sky.
Sevastopol is the historic headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, located on the southern tip of Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.
The region has been regularly attacked by Ukraine during the two-year conflict.
Razvozaev added: “The pilot ejected and escaped. Rescuers from the Sevastopol Rescue Center rescued him 200 meters from the coast. His life was not in danger.”
Other videos appeared to show the pilot floating down in his parachute after ejecting.
