MEITY blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling website links, taking action under the Online Gaming Act passed in August 2025 aimed at protecting users and preventing financial and social harm.
According to senior government leaders, the government has today blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling website links through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
A significant increase in blocking of such illegal websites has been observed since the passage of the Online Gaming Act. This act was passed in August 2025. This act imposed strict restrictions on real money games involving financial deposits by users.
According to government leaders, MEITY has taken action against more than 7800 illegal betting and gambling websites.
Government officials told CNBC TV18 that their action is aimed at curbing the financial and social harm caused by such platforms. He said that the government is considering to protect the users and especially the youth.
The government had further assured that after the law banning betting and gambling is passed, it will maintain constant vigilance. The government had said that it will have to monitor the emergence of such websites and games and take timely action. The government had then claimed that there was adequate enforcement machinery to ensure vigilance and action.
