Jalon Hall, a Black deaf employee and the first person hired by Google, has filed a lawsuit against the tech giant, alleging racial and disability discrimination. Ms Hall accused Google of failing to deliver on its commitment to inclusion, even as she hailed her as a diversity success story.

While Google promoted Ms. Hall on social media and at corporate events as an example of its inclusive work environment, the lawsuit alleges she faced a hostile work environment riddled with racial bias.

“I felt humiliated and realized my career was not going to grow,” Ms Hall told wired.

Additionally, the lawsuit details an instance in which a manager referred to Ms. Hall as an “aggressive black deaf woman” and suggested she take a sales role. Additionally, Hall claims she was excluded from discussions and passed over for a promotion due to “inaccurate assessments.”

While Google has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on procedural grounds, they have yet to respond to the specific allegations. However, Ms Hall is determined to see change.

“Google used me to make them appear inclusive to the deaf community and the disability community in general,” Ms. Hall told Wired. “In fact, they need to do better.”

Ms. Hall’s case shines a light on the underrepresentation of black and disabled employees at Google, which has nearly 183,000 employees.

Specifically, black women leave the workforce at higher rates than women of other races. Google’s deaf and hard of hearing employee group reportedly has only 40 members Company data Shown last year.
