New Delhi:

Google is discontinuing Google Pay in the United States, a strategic move to simplify its payments services and shift its focus to enhancing Google Wallet. On Thursday, the tech giant announced its blogannounced that Americans will have until June 4 to use the payments app and transfer their Google Pay balances to their bank accounts.

After June 4, Google will shut down the US version of the standalone Google Pay app. The blog also informed that after June 4, users will still be able to pay via Google Wallet, which has five times the usage of the app in the country.

“To simplify the app experience, starting June 4, 2024, the US version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be available. You can continue to access the most popular features – tap to pay in the store and manage payment methods – from Google Wallet, which is used five times more than the Google Pay app in the United States,” the blog reads.

The company added that they want to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Additionally, it said that this shift will not affect Google Pay users in India and Singapore.

It said: “We want to help this transition be as smooth as possible. Anywhere you normally use Google Pay – from online checkout to swiping your card to pay in stores – remains unchanged. For millions in India and Singapore using the Google Pay app As we continue to meet the unique needs of these countries, nothing will change.”

It said that even after the US version of Google Pay application is closed, users can still witness fund transactions through the official payment service website.

“Prior to June 4, 2024, you can use the US version of the Google Pay app to view and transfer your Google Pay balance to your bank account. After June 4, 2024, you can continue to transfer funds from Google Pay to your bank account. The website views the funds and transfers them to your bank account,” the blog added.

However, no user can send, request, or receive payments through the US version of the Google Pay app. The blog concludes by stating, “Starting June 4, 2024, you will no longer be able to send, request, or receive funds from others through the US version of the Google Pay app.”
