Google is killing the popular podcast app in the U.S. despite 500 million downloads

By | Published | No Comments

Google’s Podcasts app, which has been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide, will cease operations for U.S. users on April 2. Despite its large user base, only a small portion of U.S. podcast listeners (about 4%) use the platform. The impending shutdown has caused concern among users, who will now need to transfer their podcast subscription data to alternative services. However, this migration process can be complex and can expose users to potential security risks, such as fraud and credential theft.

End of the road for US users

Perhaps surprisingly, given its widespread popularity, Google’s Podcasts app has run out of steam for US users. While global users will still have access to the app, US users will lose access to the service starting April 2. In-app notifications have been reminding US users to tune in and migrate their subscription data before the deadline.

The announcement of the closure was made by the YouTube team, saying that the company is increasing its investment in podcasts on the YouTube Music platform. The shift is designed to enhance the podcast experience with exclusive features tailored for fans and creators.

Migrate to YouTube Music: Google’s Guide

To migrate subscription data from Google Podcasts to YouTube Music, Google provides a help guide to simplify the process. Users can follow simple steps, including selecting the export subscription option in the Google Podcasts app and transferring the data to YouTube Music. However, Google warns that not all podcasts are available on YouTube Music, although users can save them using an RSS feed link.

For those who choose to migrate their data to a platform other than YouTube Music, the process is more complicated and requires downloading the Outline Processor markup language file or using Google Takeout. Detailed instructions help users through this process.

The shutdown of Google Podcasts poses a cybersecurity risk to users, with potential scams and phishing attempts increasing. Cybercriminals may take advantage of the confusion caused by service shutdowns to distribute fake apps or lure users to malicious websites via phishing emails. It is crucial for users to remain vigilant during the migration process and rely on official channels provided by Google for assistance.
