Maybe the “evil” team should have called in Madame Morrible to do some black magic golden globe The electors were announced ahead of nominations on Monday. “Wicked: For Good” was not nominated for Best Picture or Best Director, one of several surprising exclusions.
Considering how many people are nominated, snub at the Golden Globes seems even more shocking. With six nominees in most categories, plus separate nominations for Comedy/Musical and Drama, Television and Podcast buckets as well, it looks like there will be enough nominations to go around. And yet this rarely happens. Others left included Joe Rogan, Sydney Sweeney And Gwyneth PaltrowLeaving room for lots of surprising inclusions.
Here are some of the morning’s biggest disappointments and surprises.
Snub: “Rogue: For Good” and Jon M. Chu
Yes, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande attended (although Grande’s inclusion in the supporting category is really stretching the boundaries of the word “supporting”), but this was supposed to be the year of “Wickeds” at the Golden Globes. Not only was Jon M. Chu snubbed for Best Director (again), but the film didn’t even make it into the musical/comedy category for Best Picture — and this was after he so graciously accepted last year’s Strange Reconciliation Box Office Achievement Award. Was it because “Rogue: For Good” wasn’t as well received as the first? Either way, it teaches awards bodies a lesson about “waiting” until the other to honor a two-parter (see also: “Dune”).
Surprise: Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts’ role as a Yale philosophy professor embroiled in a moral dilemma in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” was widely praised as the star’s return to form. But the film almost flopped – a critical and box office flop, suggesting it was out of the awards conversation entirely. And yet, as before, the Globes can’t resist a high-wattage star like Roberts in their midst.
Snub: Sidney Sweeney
By the same odd Golden Globes logic, it’s actually shocking that Sydney Sweeney didn’t win Best Actress, Drama. His transformative turn as a boxer in “Christy” was well received at the Toronto International Film Festival and featured award winners. It flopped at the box office, but in the most blatant sense, you’d think the show would want Swinney, who can’t help but go viral while gracing the red carpet.
Surprise: “Kpop Demon Hunters” for box office achievement.
It’s a little more confusing considering Netflix The box office does not report results as a company policy. Yes, “Kpop Demon Hunters” unofficially topped the domestic box office charts two months after hitting Netflix, but its theatrical reach was actually limited. There was an awards qualifying run, a weekend sing-along release in late August and another release on Halloween weekend that did not generate as much enthusiasm. This also doesn’t include “A Minecraft Movie,” “Lilo & Stitch” and “Superman,” which are currently the top three movies of the year at the domestic box office. Mathematics, as they say, is not mathematics.
Snub: “Ne Zha II”
And then there’s the Chinese animated epic “Ne Zha II” which is actually the biggest film of the year with a worldwide gross of over $2 billion, but because it was not a Motion Picture Association film, it fell off most charts, the film was not among the box office or animated feature nominees.
Snub: Gwyneth Paltrow
This really hurts. Here we have an A-lister making a grand return to prestige films, and somehow there’s no room for Paltrow in the supporting actress category for her extremely intelligent performance as a faded movie star in “Marty Supreme.” This would have been a win-win for the show – both for its legitimacy and its red carpet prospects.
SNUB: Joe Rogan and all political podcasts
“The Joe Rogan Experience” is the most popular podcast of the year and yet somehow it wasn’t nominated in the new podcast category. Not only that, but shortlisted political shows including “The Ben Shapiro Show,” “Pod Save America,” “The Megyn Kelly Show,” “The Tucker Carlson Show” and the Candace Owens Podcast were also left off the list.
Surprise: Emily Blunt
The prospects for “The Smashing Machine” also seemed bleak due to mixed reviews, but Blunt and, no less surprisingly, Dwayne Johnson both became successful. Blunt is extremely likable, but playing Dawn Staples was perhaps not the best showcase of her talent. Plus, maybe this should have been Paltrow’s place?
Snub: “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery”
We need to introduce Benoit Blanc to this extremely stupid mystery. Rian Johnson’s third Knives Out film received zero nominations.
Snub: “The Gilded Age”
The lavish HBO period series was completely scrapped. Mrs. Russell will not tolerate such a thing.
Snub: Katherine LaNasa
Meanwhile, Katherine LaNasa won an Emmy for her performance as Nurse Dana Evans in “The Pit,” but she didn’t even get a Golden Globe nomination?
