Weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and said, If Congressman Dubri wants to remarry, he should do so before the vote or face arrest. Mr. Sarma said that after the Lok Sabha polls, the state will implement the Uniform Civil Code and polygamy will be made illegal.

Mr Ajmal, who is contesting again from Dhubri constituency, said recently, “People in Congress and Rakipur Hussain (his Congress opponent) say I am old. But I am still strong enough to get married. “…I can do it even if the chief minister doesn’t want to, that’s my strength. “

Speaking on the sidelines of a rally on Saturday, the Assam Chief Minister said, “He (Badruddin Ajmal) should get married now. After the elections, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Assam. If If he gets married after that, he will be arrested.”

“If he (Mr Ajmal) invites us now, we will also go because it is not illegal so far. As far as I know, he has one wife. He can marry two to three more but we will The entire draft to stop polygamy immediately after the elections is ready,” he added.

The Uniform Civil Code refers to a set of universal laws applicable to all Indian citizens and is not based on religion when dealing with personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.

Mr. Sarma has repeatedly said that his government will introduce Uniform Civil Code legislation. His remarks became more frequent after the Uttarakhand Assembly passed the UCC Bill last month.

Assam will hold Lok Sabha polls in three phases – April 19, April 26 and May 7. Results will be announced on June 4.
