Georgia city warns against drinking tap water after Atlanta airport fuel spill

City GriffinThe company, whose water system serves more than 20,000 customers, said even boiled water may be unsafe and asked people to use bottled water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport spokesperson Arnisa Ruiz-Craig said the fuel leak occurred on Friday morning and cleanup efforts were underway. She could not say how much fuel leaked or why.

Griffin officials said they closed water intakes from the Flint River as a precaution, although they do not believe contaminated water reached the city. The Flint River originates near the airport, with much of its water source hidden in pipes beneath the massive airport, and then flows southwest to become one of the rivers Georgiaof major rivers are flowing into the Apalachicola River Florida.

Jet fuel and sewage leaks from the airport have repeatedly contaminated Flint’s water supply.

Griffin officials said they are now using drinking water from unaffected reservoirs in nearby Pike County and opening fire hydrants to flush the water system. The city is testing the water to determine if it is safe.
