Gary Lineker Suggested Victor JocklesThe reluctance to take risks in attack is one of the key reasons why the Swedes have struggled to make progress arsenal.
Joe Kreis has produced stunning goalscoring performances in Lisbon and was priced at £55m when he was signed from Sporting Lisbon this summer, but he has failed to replicate that in his first few months in the Premier League, scoring just five goals in 16 games in England’s top flight.
Former England international Lineker believes the 27-year-old doesn’t show the courage he deserves in front of goal, pointing to this as a key reason for his shortcomings.
“I’ve watched him (Yokere) very closely over the last few weeks and I think he’s like most forwards – he waits to see where the ball is going, waits for the ball to come in and then attacks the space,” Lineker said. The rest is football. “That’s what defenders do.
“As a striker you have to bet on where you think the ball is going to go and you pass it just as they’re about to cross. You beat the defender that way and a lot of times the ball doesn’t go there but I don’t think he does that very often.”
Lineker stressed that such attacking moves have been proven by current figures Dominic Calvert-LewinScored in six consecutive games for Leeds United.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal for Leeds against Sunderland was a perfect example, perfect. He didn’t wait to see where the ball was going to go,” he added.
“He sprinted to the right, got some distance and then he sprinted towards the near post hoping the ball would go there and it did. I rarely see anything like that with Joe Kreis at the moment, high-scoring players do that. (Erling) Haaland, (Harry) Kane, (Robert) Lewandowski, they know how to do that in those spaces.
“Is this something you can learn? I’ve always thought yes, but because it’s actually common sense, because when you think about it, it’s the law of probability.”
