Gary Gerrit sued by victim for emotional distress caused by abuse

A victim of Gary Glitter is making a compensation claim against the former pop star for the emotional harm she suffered at his hands, a High Court judge has heard.

The woman is suing Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, who was convicted in 2015 of abusing her and two other young victims between 1975 and 1980.

“I think it is fair to say that the abuse has had serious and far-reaching consequences,” her lawyer Jonathan Metzer told the court at a hearing in London on Tuesday.

“All in all, it has had a profound and lasting impact on my clients’ lives ever since.”

Umezawa said she is seeking compensation for the effects of abuse she suffered when she was 12 years old.

Gadde, 79, did not attend the hearing and was not represented by a lawyer, and the court told him he had not so far participated in the civil case. The woman, who cannot be identified, previously obtained a “default judgment” in her claim – a ruling in her favor that upheld Gadde’s liability.

Ms Tipples, the judge presiding over the case, was asked to decide how much compensation the woman could receive. Maze, who attended the hearing via video link, said her charges stemmed from the “serious sexual abuse and assault committed against her by the defendant”.

He said the woman had received “serious psychiatric diagnoses”, including complex post-traumatic stress disorder, and reports from clinical psychologists detailed how the abuse affected her mental health, relationships, education and employment.

The judge adjourned the hearing until March 27 to ensure Gard receives the case files from HMP Risley in Cheshire and give him an opportunity to respond.

The parole board denied Gadde’s request for parole in a decision issued on February 7. In 2015, he was jailed for 16 years for sexually abusing three female students.

He was voluntarily released from Verne Prison, a low-security prison in Portland, Dorset, in February last year after serving half his sentence.

But less than six weeks later he was returned to prison after police surveillance showed he breached license conditions by reportedly trying to access the dark web and view downloaded images of children.

In the late 1990s, Gadde was imprisoned for possessing thousands of child abuse photos. He was deported from Cambodia in 2002 on sex crime charges, and in March 2006 he was convicted in Vietnam of sexually abusing two girls aged 10 and 11 and jailed for two and a half years.

His crimes came to light in 2015 as part of the Met Police’s Operation Yewtree investigation, launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
