Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of cardiac arrest after being hospitalized earlier in the day. The five-time former MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau province has been serving jail terms in the state and Punjab since 2005.

Ansari was also admitted to the hospital in the early hours of Tuesday and was discharged nearly 14 hours later. Ansari’s brother, Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari, later claimed that the gangster-turned-politician was given “toxic substances” in jail.
