Lucknow, October 12 (IANS) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by five unidentified men in Lucknow and two accused have been arrested in the case. Police gave this information on Sunday.
Officials said that the girl had left home at around 12 noon on Saturday to meet her sister and was going on a motorcycle with an acquaintance.
Both of them stopped near a mango orchard near a petrol pump, when five people came near them and beat up the acquaintance. After this the criminals raped the girl.
Talking about the case, DCP South Nipun Aggarwal told IANS, “Late on October 11, Banthra police received information that a girl had been raped by some people. Immediately, based on the complaint of the victim’s father, an FIR was registered against the named accused and a team was formed to nab them.”
“Late on Saturday night, one of our teams was investigating near Harauni railway station when two people riding on a bike were asked to stop, but they (the suspects) opened fire. In defence, the police also fired, and one of the accused was shot in the leg. He was injured and taken to the hospital. During interrogation, he was identified as Lalit Kashyap, accused in the above case. Kashyap said he has also been accused of gambling and theft. cases I have been to jail before,” said DCP South Aggarwal.
He said, “One person has fled from the spot. We are trying to arrest him. The search operation is underway. Our second team has arrested the second named accused in this incident, 20-year-old Miraj, from near the railway station at a short distance. We are pursuing further action in this case.”
DCP Aggarwal announced that a motorcycle along with a country-made pistol of the accused has been recovered from the spot.
At present, the police team is searching for three other people who are still absconding and plan to arrest them soon.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also condemned the incident and called on the government to take effective steps to stop crimes against women.
In a post on X, he said, “The incident of gang rape of a teenage girl in Banthra area of the capital Lucknow is very sad and shameful. In various states of the country including UP, incidents of women harassment as well as rape and murder etc. are not stopping.”
He said, “There is an urgent need for the government to take effective steps to stop this. Forget about the honor of women, safety of women is the first and foremost requirement.”
