Even as Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 nears the end of its theatrical run, the film is still ticking at the box office. On Saturday, the Anil Sharma directorial netted Rs 50 lakh, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings Gadar 2’s 44-day collection to a massive Rs 522.84 crore.
Gadar 2 had occupancy of 25.16 percent in the Hindi-speaking market, almost double of what this week’s release The Great Indian Family saw in theatres. The sequel to the 2001 blockbuster opened with a celebratory figure of Rs 40.1 crore and continued the momentum for almost a month. It earned Rs 284.63 crore in its first week and Rs 134.47 crore, Rs 63.35, Rs 27.55, Rs 7.28 and Rs 4.72 in the following weeks.
Starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, the war drama was released on August 11 and its box office was affected only after Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan hit cinema halls on September 7. While the Atlee-directed film is breaking all records, having earned Rs 546 crore in just 17 days, it seems like Gadar 2 will fall short of Pathaan’s collection of Rs 543 crore. The film will eye a lifetime collection of Rs 525 crore by the end of this week. This coming Friday, Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War will hit cinema halls, while Jawan continues to be an audience-puller even in its third week.

Naseerudding Shah on Gadar 2’s success
Acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah opened up about the popularity of “jingoistic” films like The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story and Gadar 2, calling them “harmful”. In a new interview, the veteran actor expressed concern over the popularity of these films over the movies made by directors like Hansal Mehta, Anubhav Sinha and Sudhir Mishra. While speaking to Free Press Journal, Naseeruddin was asked if the objective of filmmaking in Bollywood has changed. He responded, “Now the more jingoist you are, the more popular you become because this is what has been ruling this country. It’s not enough to love your country but beat drums about it and you have to create imaginary enemies.”
Naseeruddin Shah pointed out that filmmakers who are making these jingoistic films are not realising “what they are doing is very harmful”. He added, “In fact, films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2, I haven’t seen them but I know what they are about. It’s disturbing that films like Kashmir Files are so massively popular whereas movies made by Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha, and Hansal Mehta, who are trying to portray the truth of their times don’t get seen.” Agnihotra dismissed the actor’s comments.
Gadar 2 is a sequel to the blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. In the film, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprise their iconic roles of Tara and Sakeena. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the film also stars Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa and Simratt Kaur in a pivotal role.
