Freezing rain and icy weather caused widespread travel disruption across Central and Eastern Europe on Tuesday, forcing central and eastern European airports to close. Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary Postpone flight.
Flights to and from Vienna International Airport, one of the busiest airports in Central Europe, were temporarily suspended. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport was forced to restrict entry and Slovakia’s international airport was closed for several hours.
Hungarian Transport Minister János Lazar wrote on social media that “freezing rain and extreme icy conditions” had halted all departing and arriving flights at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
Vienna International Airport spokesman Peter Kleemann told the Austrian news agency that incoming flights have been diverted to other airports such as Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and Venice, while departing flights have been delayed. Operations resumed later in the morning.
The cold snap also disrupted public transportation.
Tram services in Budapest have been disrupted by ice after heavy snowfall last week, the Budapest Public Transport Authority said. Many domestic and international rail services were canceled or delayed.
Austria’s state rail operator ÖBB said delays were expected in the north and east, including Vienna, and urged travelers to postpone non-urgent journeys.
Czech authorities said some trains and buses were canceled and passengers arriving from the capital’s main stations faced hours-long delays. They also said that the D8 highway to Germany was closed due to an accident on the German side. Roads are icy in parts of eastern Germany.
