Chennai, October 5 (IANS) Tamil Nadu BJP President Nanar Nagantharan has launched a brilliant attack on the State Police and the ruling DMK government, accusing the power of acting as a “deception department” instead of protecting common citizens.
He was reacting to the data obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which revealed that in the last two years, 217 people arrested by Tirunelveli District Police were admitted to the district government hospital with injuries to their hands and feet.
In a strong statement statement, Nagentharan stated that the revelation exposed a dangerous pattern of custodial cruelty and disregarded for human rights. “When DMK members commit crime and innocent are arrested, why has the police force become a hand of deception? Is it not a fundamental duty to protect the public?” He asked.
Nagenthan criticized what he said to the “Dravidian model” of the government, saying that it actually focuses more on estimating cruelty before coming to power than stopping the crime in the office.
He said, “Instead of beating and threatening the suspects, the DMK promised to crush the crime with an iron fist before forming the government. After coming to power, they are failing to stop criminal activity,” he said.
He said that despite the controversial act of Tirunelveli Asp Balveer Singh to allegedly torture the suspects – the district police have not learned a lesson – including breaking their teeth.
“The DMK government talks about protecting people, yet the police keeps on uncontrolled. How many more innocent Ajit Kumar should suffer before the Chief Minister’s intervention?” Nagentharan asked.
Asked Chief Minister MK Stalin to review the issue personally, he warned that public safety would be critical when the police violence and abuse of power are uncontrolled. He said, “Law and order is being directly monitored by the Chief Minister. They should realize that many more innocent people will suffer until the police is resumed, and will lose faith in the civil system,” he said.
Nagantharan’s comment came amid the increasing criticism of Tamil Nadu’s custodial practices and increased fresh political pressure on the DMK to demonstrate transparency and accountability in policing.
