Four more children have died from “malnutrition and dehydration” in the war-torn Gaza Strip, the Hamas-ruled region’s health ministry said on Friday, the latest such deaths reported since famine warnings were escalated.

Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in a statement that the death occurred at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, noting that the hospital was currently undergoing treatment for ” The number of children who have died from “malnutrition and dehydration” has reached 10.

Earlier on Friday, a spokesman for the U.N. humanitarian agency OCHA told reporters that “famine in Gaza is almost inevitable if changes are not made.”

“Once a famine is declared, it is too late for many people,” spokesman Jens Laerke said.

Global attention turned to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza on Thursday, with the health ministry saying more than 100 people had died as desperate Palestinians rushed aid convoys.

World leaders on Friday called for an investigation into the deaths and a ceasefire nearly five months into the war, AFP reported. The war began with a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, which killed about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive to eliminate Hamas has now killed at least 30,228 people, mostly women and children, according to the ministry’s latest tally.
